The job search is daunting and grueling. You spend so much time tweaking cover letters to match each job posting and then sending out countless resumes. All the while hoping you get a call back.
And then it happens. You get that email saying they’d like to see you in person for an interview. The butterflies set in and now it’s on. But I know you’ve heard this before, ‘if you fail to plan, you plan to fail’ so make sure you take the time to be prepared so you can succeed and ace that interview.
Just like an athlete, a ballerina and/or anyone aiming to win, we all have to spend some time doing work if we want something bad enough.
Here are some helpful tips on what to do before, during and after an interview to help you fight any nervousness and get you closer to that dream job. These are just the bullet points
Before The Interview –
- Do Your Research – try to learn as much as you can about the company you hope to work for.
- Arrive On Time – this goes without saying but take the time to map out directions in advance so you’re not late.
- Practice Your Answers – to avoid humming and stuttering, look up sample interview questions and practice in front of a mirror.
- Speak To The Admin Person – while awaiting your interview, take a few minutes to chat with the admin person so you can learn more about the company and possibly the team you’d be joining.
During The Interview –
- Dress Appropriately – when in doubt, always over dress and go as business appropriate as possible.
- Bring A Bottle Of Water – nervousness can make anyone’s mouth go dry so be prepared and have a bottle of water with you to take sips of during the interview. It also gives you a chance to pause and think in between questions.
- Ask Your Own Questions – this will show that you’ve done your homework and are truly interested in the role.
After The Interview –
- Go To The Restroom – this will give you a chance to check out the office.
- Say Thank You – this is just good manners.
- Follow Up – a short follow-up email to say you’re ‘checking on the status of your application’ can go a long way. But don’t over-do it by constantly reaching out to the employers and asking questions.
Hope these tips help you land that job you’re aspiring for.
