Check out the photos from the EMC Convention in Toronto in our photo gallery and see all the fun we had. Alhamdullilah, this was a successful weekend that drew over 700 of attendees from all over North America and some from Europe. We want to say a huge thank you to the Toronto community for being such gracious hosts this year.

Here are some highlights:

EMC Youth Retreat_2014

Youth Leadership Retreat took place August 6-7 before the convention with outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, leadership team building activities.
“Kayaking was so much fun.  I had never done something like that before.” – Youth attendee
Convention Day 1 and Day 2 on August 8-9. Our program was all about inspiring change and self-empowerment for the community and we’re so happy from the optimism we saw in all the participation during workshops and lectures ranging from topics on health, advocacy, youth development, religion and careers.
“I didn’t know what EMC was about until I attended this convention.  It was amazing to see so many Eritrean Muslims in one place.  My favorite discussion was the one about marriage.  It was interesting to hear the parents and youth opinions on the topic that is sensitive in our community.”

“The workshops are fantastic.  I wish there were more of them.  The one about cancer was very informative and the doctor really made it easy to understand what he was explaining.  I appreciated that the lecture was in Tigrinya.”

EMC Photobooth – We set up an area where members can take a photo in front of the banner and individuals and families had a lot of fun.
EMC Picnic -Over 1000 people attended the EMC picnic in Toronto on Sunday, August 10.  There was a great BBQ, group discussion, boon ceremony and outdoor games to enjoy.
EMC Kids– We’re so happy to have our youngest come out and get to know their family and friends during the convention. It’s extremely satisfying to create an environment where they can be happy and learn how to be proud of their identity.
